With the FIFA World Cup coming up soon, I decided to print out a Prediction Bracket Chart and put it up on my wall. I’m sharing it here with you so that you can take your best guesses and place your bets. Enjoy! The World Cup starts soon!
The Importance of Punctuation
Sometimes, a sentence, punctuated differently, can have the wrong (or sometimes opposite) effect. Consider this love letter from Gloria to John.
Dear John:
I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we’re apart. I can be forever happy–will you let me be yours?
Gloria
What Gloria really meant was this:
Dear John:
I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. When we’re apart, I can be forever happy. Will you let me be?
Yours,
Gloria
Now consider this video, where the announcer is replacing the regular commentator, and is supposed to say, [Intro] “Good evening, I’m Ken Bastida. Dana is off tonight.” [Lead story] “He was murdered and set on fire while celebrating his birthday…”
Didier Drogba – Footballer and Peace Broker
The Times Online of England has put out an article that examines the King of Africa, Didier Drogba. Though he plays for his native land of Ivory Coast, he has also spent considerable time in France. What sets him apart from other footballers is that he is not only an idol to millions of football fans around the world, but he has also brokered peace in Ivory Coast between the north and the south through extraordinary means – through football!
The article is a very interesting read into one of the more intriguing footballers of our generation. Click here to read all of it.
Uganda Misinformation on Homosexuality
I found this video on youtube the other day, and literally couldn’t stop laughing. Granted, it is a touchy subject for most, but the blatant passion with which this gentleman makes his case against homosexuality is sure to get a few laughs out of you. The majority of Uganda’s population are practicing Christians, and presentations in churches by gentlemen such as the one featured are shaping anti-gay laws and attitudes in Uganda.
Before you proceed, let me warn you that this video is not suitable for the workplace. [NSFW]
Conan (2003) Dark Horse Comics
In my younger days, I used to read comics such as Tintin, Asterix and Obelix, Archie’s, Jughead, and the occasional Marvel comic. However, it is at a much older age that I discovered this amazing illustrated version of Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian books. Conan has been often portrayed in comics by various artists, but I have to say that the Dark Horse conan comics really shine above all others. I seldom read comics now, but having picked up and read through Conan, I am tempted to once again revisit them.
The Conan comics are not for children – they deal with violence and gore, the very nature of Conan and pictured by Howard. The series stays faithful to the events of the book, so if you were planning on picking up the books again, I suggest you opt for the comics instead.
You can visit the Dark Horse Conan Zone or read more about them on Wikipedia.
Firefly Moments Cartoonized
Whilst traversing the underbelly of yonder internets, I stumbled upon this little gem of a comic – which I then quickly photoshopped into a 1680×1050 wallpaper. Click it to download the bigger version.
In addition to Wash’s famous opening-scene moment with his toy dinosaurs, the author/artist has cartoonized two other moments, which you can find here on their blog. Three cheers for Firefly!
Firefly (2002) TV Show
Today I want to introduce you all to a great television show called Firefly. It remains, to this day, one of my favourite television shows and a staple in sci-fi television series. If you’re interested in Science Fiction at all, you need to give this a watch.
Firefly is, arguably, less sci-fi and more western. Seldom do we see high tech laser gadgets, and never do we meet an alien species. The series is fully homo-sapien in its casting. So what makes Firefly a show that tops my list?
The characters. The story of Firefly revolves around a interstellar cargo-ship that sometimes ventures towards smuggling illegal shipments to cover expenses. Keeping the ship, Serenity – a firefly class vehicle, is priority number one. It provides a refuge and symbolizes freedom from the Alliance for the captain and first-mate of the ship – both whom fought on the losing side of the war. They are joined by a pilot, a mechanic, a grunt, a prostitute, a priest, a doctor, and a psychotic young girl. These 9 characters make up the show and each episode. The dynamics of the relationships shared between these characters is what makes the story shine. With witty writing and very distinctive personalities, the crew of Serenity makes television worthwhile.
Lest I spoil the rest for you, I’ll stop my pen. Sadly the show only aired for one season, and a movie followed in 2005. But perhaps that, too, can be considered a boon to Firefly – that the studio executives didn’t get a chance to murder the series, had it perhaps aired for several seasons. I take solace in that justification. :-)
